The name DHOBI ( a person who is specialized in cloth washing ) and GHAAT (Is the name of the
place where they wash the clothes) and so the name.

The dhobi in India refers to a traditional laundryman, who will collect your dirty linen, wash it, and
return it neatly pressed to your doorstep. All for a meager amount.
Dhobi Ghaat is a special type of open air laundry situated in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai where the dhobi′s wash
thousands of clothes a day.Hundreds of dhobi′s are seen washing clothes and linen at the same time.
The cloth is soaked in water and then are washed by hardly beating the clothes on the stone. Then they
are tossed into huge vats of boiling starch and hung out to dry. Next they are ironed and piled into
neat bundles.

Surprisingly none of the clothes are ever lost or exchanged with someone else clothes. Washing and
dyeing the clothes, giving stone wash look to jeans are the major chunk of work here. Because of its
uniqueness Dhobi Ghaat has become a popular tourist spot.
