oldest antique store in Mumbai, Phillips Antiques offers
an interesting selection of silver, lacquer, Oriental and European
porcelain and pottery, brass toys, Victorian coloured glass, hanging
lamps, wooden writing boxes, money-banks, jewellery, table lamps,
perfume bottles, candlesticks, decanters, Gaudy-Dutch pottery, wine
glasses, South-East Asian trade pottery, tea pots, Indian Sindh
pottery, coins, brass surveying instruments, among others.
Also
available is a fine collection of original engravings, lithographs,
sea charts, maps, town plans, colonial and ethnic furniture, reproduction
furniture and architectural items, marble items and other decorative
accessories like fountains, benches, planters, pots, bird-baths,
pedestals, specimen marble inlaid tabletops, wind-up brass horn
gramophones, sandstone artefacts, kitchen-clocks, pedestal and ceiling
fans, coloured glass hanging-lanterns, etc.
A family-run concern for the last four generations and founded
in 1860, this antique store is located in the centre of the city's
heritage precinct. Many an important visitor has been to the store
over the years, the most recent being American President Bill
Clinton who visited the store in March 2000.
So authentic and wide-ranging is the stock, that successive filmmakers
from 'Passage to India', 'Heat and Dust', 'Octopussy', 'The Jungle
Book' and 'Gladiator', have requested props from the store.
