The
success and rapidity of the growth of the ITES sector.
The Indian IT enabled outsourcing market was born in the mid-1990s
when companies such as British Airways and GE capital set up captive
units for customer support and transaction processing services.
At first the work was mostly limited to call centres, but in the
past two or three years companies have come to India for much more
sophisticated tasks like financial analysis, software design, tax
preparation and even creation of presentations. Today India tops
an Index of 11 countries ranked in terms of attractiveness for off-shoring
IT outsourcing, according to a recent report prepared by global
management consulting firm, A T Kearney. Business Process Outsourcing
(BPO/IT enabled services (ITES) is the biggest business opportunity
to come India's way for decades, although its potential to transform
the country has not yet been fully recognised. A report published
on the BPO market by Gartner group, states that every Fortune 100
CEO is looking at BPO in India. There are more than 3, 50,000 people
working in IT services and outsourcing in India, the number is expected
to pass one million before 2008.
India with its value proposition and unique geographic positioning
is well positioned to benefit from the outsourcing market. People
who look to outsource look at three key areas- Infrastructure, Talent
pool of English speaking people and quality of services. India excels
by leaps and bounds in these three areas particularly with the talent
pool that it offers. Unlike the US and Europe in India people of
much higher intelligence are attracted to the BPO-ITES sector which
has helped India to evolve from a basic outsourcing service provider
to a destination which is now performing fairly sophisticated work.
This has resulted into high quality service which has triggered
an atmosphere of satisfaction not only among the clients but also
the final customers who are beginning to feel good about India.
