Mumbai's Fashion Street.
Fashion
Street is a favourite haunt of the fashion conscious of Mumbai.
With each passing day, people are becoming increasingly aware of
the fashion trends set by designers. Expensive designerwear clothing
is mostly beyond the reach of the average Mumbaiite. But there is
no need to lose heart, for at Fashion Street one can pick up the
most trendy clothes at a fraction of what they would cost at a reputed
departmental store of the city.
If
you want to flaunt any of the reputed brand names such as Pepe,
Calvin Klein or say Lee, then you should have no problem
at all. Never mind if some of them are fakes; they all
look like the real thing. The roadside stalls are a storehouse of
readymade garments all of which are export surplus or quality conscious
importers' rejected stuff. Stretching for over 3 kms on the Mahatma
Gandhi Road along Azad Maidan, Fashion Street's vendors sell
anything and everything : jeans, peddlers, tang tops, jump suits,
T shirts, bermudas, wrap-around- skirts you name it, they have got
it. The location of Fashion Street is very convenient, as it is
nestled between the two terminal railway stations, Churchgate and
Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
With
college crowds thronging the place, Fashion Street is an indicator
of what is in and what is out in terms of fashion, be it clothes,
shoes or junk jewellery. Fresh stocks arrive every three months.
Ramona, a college student from St Xavier's feels, "The stuff
you get to pick up at Fashion street is quite cool and if you ask
me about the quality, I would definitely vouch for it." Junk
jewellery is a big hit with the teenagers, the fastest selling being
the oxidised metal bracelets which come pretty cheap. Just imagine
buying a necklace for Rs. 20 or a ring for Rs. 5. "When
it comes to picking up jewellery, I just freak out at this place
for there is so much to chose from", says Anny of Mithibhai
College.
While shopping at Fashion Street, one has to follow the golden
rule: bargain. "One has to bargain very hard" says
Anny. You have to bargain right to be able to strike a deal and
this applies for each and every thing.
For a sum of Rs 1000 you can end up with a whole new set of clothes,
shoes, bags and other accessories. The branded jeans jackets, and
T shirts are genuine to look at and can easily pass off as the real
thing. If you are looking for true value for your money, then Fashion
Street is the place to go.
