Occidental Couture
Pria Kataria Puri combines oriental and western ideas to
add an inner beauty to the female form writes Latika Sidana
Among the original proponents of Indian Nouvelle Couture Pria
Kataria Puri
stands in sharp contrast to her contemporaries in the domestic fashion
industry. Having recently won the Bharat Yuv Ratna and the
Bharat Vikas Award for designing women’s wear, it looks like
she is all set to conquer the fashion industry. In less than six
years this twenty-eight year old designer has achieved great recognition
for her work, not only in India, but in the Europe and US as well.
Her name is associated with Occidental Couture, which is
an amalgamation of oriental and western ideas to add an inner beauty
and mystique to the female form. Her contemporary Indian designs
are modern in their form and traditional in their mode of expression.
She sums up her fashion credo with the words, " Elegance
does not mean being noticed; it means being remembered." No
complicated shapes no frills or a lot of fuss, simply elegant yet
luxurious clothing is what she believes in.
People in Mumbai will now have access to exquisite Kashmiri tilla
kani and resham work, an addition to intricate zardosi creations
at the Pria Kataria Studio. Though the studio offers clothes
that can be bought off the shelf, Kataria will also indulge
in custom clothing for those looking for something distinctive.
Taking into consideration, the face, personality, structure, style,
height, skin tone, hair colour and occasion, she plans to create
a haute couture for the client.
A graduate from the San Francisco’s Fashion Institute for
Designing and Merchandising (FIDM) Kataria’s clients include
the likes of Maharani of Kashmir and Priyanka Gandhi Vadera
besides Bianca Jagger, Ivana Trump and Barbara Bush.
