BUPA finds niche in India
BUPA
is the British Provident Association, the largest independent
health care organisation in the UK and has operations in seven others
countries. BUPA owns and manages 39 acute care hospitals, 221 care
homes, 34 health screening centres as well as networks occupational
health centres, home care services and nursing services. BUPA is
also the United Kingdom's largest private medical insurer.
As
the Indian private health care market opens up, BUPA believes opportunities
exist to develop 'one stop' health facilties with primary care and
diagnostic facilties. The 'one stop' health clinics, known as polyclinics,
are new to India's private healthcare sector. This is despite the
fact that many employers in India are looking for help to improve
the quality and manage the costs of providing health care to their
workforces. BUPA hopes to take advantage of this gap in the Indian
health care market by investing in polyclinics that offer a full
spectrum of out-patient care and diagnostic facilities with comprehensive
computerised records.
The joint venture between Piramal Enterprises Ltd and BUPA will
look for any related development opportunities, both within Mumbai,
and across the rest of India. The Piramal group was selected as
BUPA's partner after a long protracted search that took six months.
