It's a colourful scene at the Gateway of India, with numerous boats and ferries lined up to take tourists to the Elephanta Island. They are the cheapest and best mode of transport to the beaches and islands nearby. One can hire these boats for short harbour cruises too.

Apart from ferries, a unique mode of transport to Vashi, Navi Mumbai, is the super-fast Hovercraft from the Gateway of India. Most ferries do not operate during the monsoons.

From the Gateway of India, the ferry operators usually charge Rs 30/- per person to the Elephanta Island. There is also another boat terminus at Ferry Warf, where one can get boats to nearby places like Alibhag, Rewas and Mandwa.
