Morarka
Centre for Crafts
Preserving
Indian arts and crafts is the only goal of Morarka Centre for
Crafts (MORCRAFTS), a centre run by a group of young women.
Established five years ago, the Centre plays an active role in the
dissemination and education of various art and craft activities.
MORCRAFTS regularly organises seminars, workshops, lectures, exhibitions,
conferences, film screenings and craft related performances.
The
Centre helps promote dialogue amongst crafts persons, designers,
architects, art historians, critics, artists and theatre and cinema
activists with programmes such as:
* Rachna Design in Texture and Space to show handcrafted
textiles via a performance by noted dancer Daksha Sheth.
* From Empire to Emporium - Khadi and the Robes of Independence,
which entailed an exhibition curated by Emma Tarlo and the installation
of the exhibition by Sumant Jayakrishnan. 'The Wheels turn Full
Circle' was an illustrative lecture by Devika Bhojwani and Jaya
Bachchan. This programme was organised in association with KVIC
to provide direct employment to
many khadi weavers across the country.
The Morarka Centre also helps create a network of communication
between craftspersons and actual users by tackling issues regarding
rural and gender employment by organising programmes such as: The
Running Stitch, where women of Bhusura, a village in Bihar,
interacted with artists and designers to create new ideas.
To
help preserve a learned skill by supporting a craftsperson and sustain
his interest in the chosen craft form with programmes such as: puppetry
workshop from Rajasthan, crafts from Kalamkari, tie and dye and
block printing workshop. They also invite collaboration from other
centres to establish a broad base of shared activities. Promotion
of books, films and documentary projects concerned with crafts are
also part of their activities.
The
Centre encourages research and documentation gathering amongst students
for traditional and contemporary craft forms as part of their curriculum.
They also assist in the creation of a library of books, slides,
audio cassettes, films, video and craft-related documents.
