Emporium
Chinars in Mumbai
- at the Kashmir Government Arts Emporium
Located
at the World Trade Centre, Chinar, the Kashmir Government Arts
Emporium, was established in the year 1980. It is part of the
unemployment enterprise by the Government of Jammu & Kashmir,
engaging all award winning artisans with the view to showcase Kashmir
handicrafts.
"Over
the two decades that we have set up shop in the World Trade
Centre, we have been able to improve qualitatively and quantitatively.
There has also been a notable increase in our turnover and sales,"
says Nazir Ahmed Beig, manager, Chinar, Kashmir Government
Arts Emporium. "The best selling items in our store are our
Kashmiri oriental carpets in silk, silk cotton and wool. They cost
anything between Rs 15,000 to Rs 1 lakh depending on the knotage,"
he continues. Their customers are mostly NRIs and they have a daily
customer flow of 50 to 100 people, depending on the season.
"Our
handicrafts are original and handmade and a customer takes a minimum
of 40 to 45 minutes to browse through our store," says Beig.
All the people in the store have come down from Kashmir, and they
have very good knowledge of the products, their manufacturing process,
the raw materials involved and can even advice the customer on what
will be the most suitable product.
