  ROYAL BOMBAY YACHT CLUB

Royal Bombay Yatch ClubOver 150 years old, the Royal Bombay Yacht Club, one of Mumbai's oldest clubs, is basically meant for sailing enthusiasts. Members and their guests have access to various boats that can be taken on hire. Throughout the sailing season (October to May), the Royal Bombay Yacht Club organises various events, especially on weekends, which are slotted for cruising, racing or training. On weekdays you can pretty much do your own thing. Though the primary objective remains sailing, the club has all the paraphernalia that goes with an exclusive Mumbai club - like restaurants, bars and the lot.

  THE SEA CADET CORPS

Sea Cadet CorpsThe Sea Cadet Corps is not a sailing club. It is a non-government voluntary youth organisation that is involved in building character and discipline in students through nautical and allied training. Sailing is only a part of its activities, but sailing is one of the things it has excelled in, with ten of the eleven sailors representing India at the World Championship in Poland and winning the Optimist World Championship in Spain. The organisation was started in the year 1938 by Gokaldas Ahuja in Karachi and was given official recognition by Parliament in 1961. The headquarters, the impressive training ship Jawahar was commissioned in 1966 by Dr Radhakrishnan. Concrete ShipThe ship, built of cement and concrete, is the venue for 4 and a half hour training sessions every Sunday. The cadets are between the ages of 10 and 18 and the course is 4 years long. Cadets are supposed to learn swimming within 6 months of joining. All the officers are Sea Cadets themselves who have stayed on and work on a honorary basis. The other curricula include seamanship, naval customs, fire-fighting, bands, communication, history of sailing, etc. The cadets have good prospects in the navy, the armed forces or the merchant navy.
